What You Should Know About Lawn and Garden Irrigation: An Interview with Jack Barry of Water Wizards Irrigation, LLC

By Jack Barry

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Water Wizards Irrigation, LLC was founded in 2003 by Jack Barry. Water Wizards Irrigation LLC is a family owned and operated company that specializes in residential and commercial lawn irrigation and water features. Water Wizards Irrigation LLC offers every aspect of lawn sprinkler service. Spring activations, routine maintenance, repair, winterization and Connecticut-licensed backflow testing. We also offer design and new installation of lawn sprinkler systems, lawn sprinkler system components and water features, such as ponds, waterfalls and other various water features.

Can you briefly explain some of main differences for homeowners with a yard that has an irrigation system versus a yard that doesn't have one?

Healthy green grass is the goal. Homeowners that have sprinkler systems know this. In summers where this is little rain and warm temps, grass turns brown and sometime dies. Having your own irrigation system stops this, keeps the dust down and improves the value of your home. It's more efficient than dragging the hose around and waste less water in the process. Automatic wireless rain sensors are installed to control unwanted watering and over watering. Irrigation systems promote healthy root systems and keep weeds under control, along with regular weed and pest control applications.

What are some of the basic options that people have when it comes to irrigation design?

Design of your sprinkler system is done by our professional design staff based on what the homeowner's needs are. We will make professional recommendations based on prior experience and careful overview of your yard. There are many options such as remote controls, WiFi systems, pest and fertilization control right through your sprinkler system. Stainless steel sprinklers that are heavy-duty drip systems for your delicate flowers and gardens, and micro drip for those hanging plants.

Is there something that most homeowners don't know about lawn irrigation that they should know?

It's not as expensive as you think! An automatic sprinkler system can actually save you money on your water bill. Also, it does very little damage to your lawn upon installation.

What kind of maintenance do lawn and garden irrigation systems need after they're installed?

Your basic routine maintenance is spring activation, winterization and backflow testing, which is required by the state of Connecticut and most others. Custom maintenance plans are available to suit your needs.

Do you have any tips to help maintain healthy, green grass (or a thriving garden) without an overly expensive water bill?

Water deeply, not frequently. The longer and harder your water cycle is, the better. Everyday short water cycles don't help with root penetration. Water your delicate plants from below where it counts. No wasted water on plant or tree tops. Have a professional tune up your system to maintain perfect adjustments and matched precipitation.
