Preaching, Practice, and Coffee at Westminster Orthodox Presbyterian Church

By Elizabeth Elstien

Pastor Jonathan Holst loves to preach the Gospel. Holst is pastor at Westminster Orthodox Presbyterian Church (WOPC) that boasts a diversity of people with a shared faith in Christ. "We have truck drivers and Yale professors, vice presidents of international companies and job seekers, old and young," says Holst.

This diversity means that not everyone in the congregation reside in Hamden, where the church is located. No matter where its members reside, the WOPC does believe in supporting its homebase. The church supports charities connected with the police, fire service and veterans' groups in Hamden. "In addition to this," says Holst, "we invest time and money in the Master's Manor of Wallingford and Bridgeport Rescue Mission, both of which assist the homeless. We have also collaborated with WIHS 104.9FM radio station."

Based around the belief that the Old and New Testaments are the direct Word of God and with the Protestant Reformation as its backbone, WOPC is faithful to the scriptures' teachings and how these teachings are applied to everyday living, explains Holst.

There are plenty of chances to have meet and discuss sermons or other issues with others who attend WOPC. Main worship is on Sunday, but members also come for Wednesday Bible studies. "Our community together time is always with coffee and cakes, sometimes with a sit-down meal," Holst says. Members get together other times too. Holst continues, "Subgroups of the congregation meet during the week, and infrequently on Saturday mornings for breakfast at a local diner."

What does Holst love most about his work at WOPC? He tells us, "Seeing grace at work. I'm always delighted to see people grow spiritually and emotionally; sometimes this means 'walking' with people through some besetting life challenges, though at other times it means getting out of the way and watching them become a better mom, dad, brother, or sister."

The Westminster Orthodox Presbyterian Church is located at 565 Shepard Avenue in Hamden.
