Top 5 Best Places to Live in Hartford County

By Mary Lamphere

The best places to live in Hartford County will depend on a variety of factors such as crime rates, cost of living, educational opportunities and schools, things to do and close proximity to healthcare or related services. If you're a business owner looking for a place close to the city, you may choose the central location of Hartford as the prime place for you. If you're a parent with school age children, Windsor or Farmington may be top on your list of best places to live simply because these two towns have excellent school systems.

Simsbury

Low property crime rates and higher education are likely two primary reasons to live in Simsbury. The median household income in the area is over $102K which is likely at least part of the reason why property crimes are so low. An estimated 1.9 burglary or auto thefts per 1,000 residents occur in Simsbury making this one of the safest places in Hartford County to live.

Avon

Above average household income, low property crime and excellent schools attract residents to Avon. Local Avon High School has earned recognition as the number one public high school in Hartford County two years in a row and the US News & World Report awarded the school a silver medal. Avon was named the third safest town in America by Money Magazine in the early 2000s and continues to be one of the safest places in the country to live and raise a family.

Glastonbury

Although crime rates aren't perfect in Glastonbury, this area does have exceptional schools and residents have an above average medical household income of about $96K. Crime rates are below 3 burglaries or thefts per 1000 residents and residents enjoy a close proximity to Hartford which is just 8 miles away. For those who work in the city and wish to live right on the outskirts, Glastonbury is the ideal place to live and to work.

Granby

For a rural feel that's comfortable, affordable and has pretty good schools, Granby is a great place to live. There are plenty of places to shop and no need to drive into town just for groceries as Granby, though rural, does have an abundance of grocery stores and establishments to make your life easy. If you're the type that likes to shop at the mall, you'll have to take a short drive but easy highway access makes for an easy commute either for work or for fun.

South Windsor

A relatively rural feel paired with plenty of major shopping and upscale living opportunities make South Windsor an ideal place to live in Hartford County. The northern end of town is seemingly more affordable but the entire area has a carefree feeling that makes for pristine living and comfort. South Windsor provides a relatively easy commute so if you work in the city this is the ideal place for you.
