Refreshing Italian Ice in the Heart of Bridgeport's North End

By Marina Jokic

People love ice cream. In the U.S. alone, more than one billion gallons of the creamy stuff is consumed every year. Although mainstream chains will always dominate the marketplace with their cheap pricing and fast food-type service, homemade ice cream is a decadent alternative that customers love to indulge in.

Rather than getting a quick fix of mediocre Italian ice, imagine how much better a carefully prepared, lusciously smooth concoction like Micalizzi's would taste. Micalizzi's owner and manager Jay Piccirillo swears by fresh ingredients and small batches made daily. Mizalizzi's has been around for more than seven decades, and for 40 years the Piccirillo family has been running the business. Jay insists he will never change Micalizzi's recipe since one shouldn't mess with perfection, although he has considerably expanded the cache of flavors.

The secret to getting the ideal taste and texture is in the ingredients and preparation, Piccirillo said. The affordable pricing is also a boon for business. With more than 25 ice flavors and 15 ice cream flavors, Micalizzi wants to cover all their bases and give their customers a wide variety to choose from.

Piccirillo views making his sweet treats as culinary art, working with the finest components. You won't see run-of-the-mill ice here, but instead a delectable and creamy confectionary masterpiece. Prime Italian ice flavors include lemon, cherry, watermelon, and blue raspberry with lemon being the original ice flavor at Micalizzi and a must-try.

"Our biggest ice cream specialty is our homemade cannoli ice cream," Piccirillo said. "It is addicting and absolutely delicious." The cannoli ice cream, usually sold as a high-end dessert, is not your average convenience or chain store flavor. Micalizzi's American Beauty is a mixture of ice cream and Italian ice, combining the two textures into a unique and refreshing dessert with fewer calories. Other best-selling ice cream flavors include maple walnut, pumpkin, coconut, and fresh banana. In addition to the regular ice varieties with sugar, there are lemon and cherry sugar-free options.

"We are very passionate about our business, and dedicated to 100 percent customer satisfaction," the owner said. Micalizzi offers their products wholesale, caters events such as fundraisers and parties, and is enjoying particular success with their Brainfreeze Cart and their new Micalizzi Now Mobile truck.

"Also, many area restaurants and bars carry the Micalizzi martinis and margaritas?must-haves in summer," Piccirillo said. Micalizzi's Italian ice is the perfect way to beat the summer heat and humidity.
