Master the Aerial Arts at Mantra

By Jake Levin

The most rewarding part of Linda Dreher's job is assisting new yogis on their journey, she said.

Dreher is the owner of Mantra, a studio that combines the practice of yoga and the aerial arts under one roof. While people may find themselves intimidated to give it a whirl at first, Dreher encourages all newcomers to come try yoga.

"I love the chance to show them that yoga is for everybody," Dreher said. "I am very proud of the wonderful community that we have created here at Mantra."

The sense of community carries over beyond the walls of Mantra, as Dreher pointed out that students and teachers have become friends even away from class.

"I have seen so many friendships blossom at our studio," Dreher said.

Yoga has many benefits for the body, according to Dreher. Practicing yoga regularly creates space in the body by lengthening and opening tight muscles. Yoga increases balance, builds strength and stability and perhaps most important of all, reduces anxiety.

Aerial arts, including hammock, silks and circus hoop classes are also offered at Mantra. A more dynamic and energetic practice, aerial arts builds strength and flexibility and is a great practice on it's own or as a compliment to a yoga practice.

"If you are brand new to aerial arts, the place to start is with a beginner hammock class," Dreher said. "There you will 'get off the ground' and learn the basics of aerial fabrics. At Mantra, we also offer aerial silks and circus hoop classes that allow, those who wish, to fly a little higher! Check out our website for more info, www.mantrastamford.com or come in for a tour and consultation."

Mantra is located at 62 Southfield Ave. at One Stamford Landing in Stamford, right on the water. During warmer weather, classes may be held outside at the scenic setting.
