Landscape Design Made Easy: An Interview with Christian Gombos of Laurel Land Design

By Christian Gombos

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are what is called in our business a design build company. We design and construct predominantly residential landscape projects. Projects include walks, walls, patios, planting of shrubs trees and perennials, lawn install seed or sod, landscape lighting, drainage, water features, etc. We take a homeowner from conceptual sketches to implementation of all our ideas.

What's one of the biggest challenges for homeowners in the Connecticut area when it comes to landscape design?

Upkeep. It's very nice to have a beautiful landscape installed but with the creation of beds, plantings and lawn. A true maintenance schedule need to be adopted and a qualified contractor should be brought aboard to do it right. All living plant material need proper care routinely to allow it to thrive and look the way the designer intended it to.

What's one of the most important things that people should consider when they start a new landscape or yard project?

It's a costly endeavour that should well thought out. Find a designer who you can work with and who shares your sense of style. Investigate costs, products and contractors. If what you really want is too expensive, phase out something else so you have no regrets. The phrase "it's not like it's written in stone" describing the finality of the words pertains especially in hardscape. It's not written, but it's made of stone. It can be costly, labor intensive and sometimes not what you wished you had.

How should a homeowner choose the right landscape professional to work with?

I would suggest going to your local stone yard or nursery. Talk to the people who are working all the time with these contractors.

What's the difference between a landscape designer, landscape architect and landscape contractor?

A designer may or may not have any formal education but has built a reputation on style. A landscape architect has a degree from an accredited university or college and has passed a test to become a licensed landscape architect.

What are some of the most popular landscape features that people want in Connecticut?

Outdoor kitchens and rooms are very hot. Firepits and fireplaces. Replacement of a tired foundation planting. Anything flowering.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?
