Energy Efficient Exterior Home Improvements: An Interview with J.C. Tonnotti Window Company

Describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Joe Tonnotti started the company with his wife Faith in 1999. We specialize in installing windows, doors, and siding. We have also recently expanded our services to include a painting division. We have a solid A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and have excellent reviews on Angie's list. We have our own team of installers on staff as well as full time office staff to help customers and answer any questions.

What is your position at JCT?

I am the office manager.

What should homeowners be looking for in a good contractor?

Homeowners should do their homework before allowing a contractor to make changes to their homes. We introduce ourselves and offer our CT License and Liability Insurance. Homeowners should also look at the longevity of the company they are considering hiring. If a contractor has only been around a year or two, chances are he may fold. If there are issues with the work then there is no recourse. Most new businesses fail within the first 5 years. Subcontractors are another issue that homeowners should be asking about. Who is actually going to do the work? Has the sales rep written a contract? Do you agree with all the details? Have you worked out payment arrangements? These are all details that a good contractor will work out in advance with the homeowners. There should be no surprises on the job.

You have a lot of window options- how do you help customers choose?

Our sales reps are very knowledgeable and know that different windows offer different attributes. If homeowners are in a condo complex, they may be required to have one type of window over another. Another way to narrow down the choices are by price or how long a family plans on being in their home. Of course we offer both double and triple pane windows, which can offer different levels of energy savings.

How do your home improvement services compare to others in the area?

We have our own full staff of experienced carpenters and siders who are fully equipped and insured. We have our own fleet of logoed vehicles and stand behind our work with a guarantee. We also have full time office staff to assist customers from 7am to 6pm most days. Our sales reps are available nights and weekends in addition to daytime appointments.

What is your basic business philosophy?

Simply put, "We measure our success by the relationships we build."
