The Benefit of a Quality Moving Service: An Interview with Clancy Moving

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Clancy Relocation & Logistics was founded in the Bronx, NY in 1921. In 1951, Clancy became one of the original founding members of United Van Lines and to this day participates as one of 120 stock holding agents.

Today, we have warehouses in Fairfield County, CT and Dutchess and Putnam Counties in NY. The newest and largest is our 150,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Newtown, CT. We also have a sales office in Stamford, CT. Clancy Moving Systems, Inc. performs household relocation, warehousing and logistics operations, furniture installation, data center moving, rigging as well as library and hotel services.

You seem to offer many different services including data center, library, and hospitality services. This is of course in addition to residential and commercial moving. Would you pick any specific ones out as your specialties?

We have many services but we wouldn't be offering any of them if they weren't specialties. Household, library and office moving have been a part of our company for the longest amount of time. But the other specialties came about organically in the past 20 years.

How did you get into this line of work?

We have crews who move servers in and out of data centers every day. It started with a few people we hired with about 50 combined years of experience in data centers. They have very specific skills and knowledge. We can handle the careful orchestration of disconnecting and reconnecting mission critical servers in a very tight time frame. We started other specialties, like rigging, similarly.

What is your specific position at Clancy Moving?

I run sales and marketing for the company.

Do you believe that moving services are truly necessary for the average homeowner?

We believe our moving services are hugely beneficial for homeowners. The main reason is relocating is one of the most stressful events in a person's life. It's up there with events like marriage, divorce and job changes. So we take pride in knowing we can help a family or individual get through the moving process with the least amount of stress possible.

The average homeowner has other important needs, which make us valuable and necessary. It can take several years or decades to accumulate, assemble and store prized possessions, but moving it all at once can be overwhelming and take more time than one could possibly have. So we come in and handle all the most time consuming and strenuous work.

What sets your moving services apart from competition in your area?

We have a culture from top to bottom, which benefits our customers the most. Our culture is not just about moving people's stuff. It's about changing people's lives. We try to nurture every client as caringly as possible. It's not just management who feels this way. Our crews are very much in tune with making our customers as comfortable as possible. We have grown our business this way from a 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse to 3 warehouses totaling 300,000 sq. ft.

Can you give us an example of a strange or a tough situation you have had to deal with while moving a customer in the past couple years?

We recently we moved a customer out of their home in Fairfield County right before hurricane Sandy. Their house was on the coast of the Long Island sound. It was a large house and the packing and loading was going to take a full week. With the hurricane coming, we agreed to triple the crew size and start on the weekend instead of Monday. We finished the job on Sunday. The next day, the hurricane did significant damage to the home. It is likely most of the contents in the house would have been destroyed. We also remember the frenzy of phone calls from people looking to move sooner. It seems everyone knew this storm would be as bad as it turned out to be. And for a short time in October and November we were as busy as we have ever been.

How early should a homeowner contact a moving services company before the day of their move?

Homeowners should contact a moving company as early as 8 weeks ahead of their planned move. This allows homeowners to take advantage of some very valuable planning and guidance we offer. And it is even more important during the summer. Throughout the summer, especially the end of June, there are moving people wanting to move than there are movers to move them. It never ceases to amaze us when someone calls on June 20th and wants to move to California on June 24. Hiring a mover is not like ordering a pizza.

What are some common mistakes that homeowners make when hiring certain moving companies?

The most common mistake is selecting the lowest estimate. Reputation is the most important factor. A moving company that has earned a good reputation is not going to risk it for one move. Yet there are movers who take advantage of unknowing customers all the time. They get a low estimate and the mover charges much more with no justification. Look for a mover who is a member of a major van line like United Van Lines. United will not accept an unscrupulous mover into its system and will not allow a poor performing mover to remain an agent.
