Improved Physical Conditioning at Bridgeport's Oldest Pilates Studio

By Kelly Church

Black Rock Pilates Studio is the longest running Pilates studio in Bridgeport, CT with trained and certified instructors that give individual attention to each client. Laura Pennock, owner of the studio, opened the current location nine years ago after moving out of a smaller studio. Clients of all ages and physical abilities can take mat Pilates, TRX and reformer classes.

"We pride ourselves on having a studio where all feel comfortable and welcome," Pennock says. "Our clients range from an older population [to] clients recovering from injury [to] clients who are in great condition and athletes. Pilates is for everyone."

There are both group classes and private sessions offered at Black Rock Pilates Studio. Mat Pilates and reformer classes are all one hour sessions and held throughout the week in the mornings through the afternoon. Mat Pilates are drop-in classes, while reformer classes must be signed up for ahead of time. There are also express Pilates classes and mat classes with smaller items of equipment. Those classes, and TRX classes, are all 45 minutes and can be signed up for ahead of time as well. Group classes can be purchased in packages.

Private sessions are for those who want a more individualized experience in the studio. They can be purchased as one-on-one sessions and duet sessions for 30 minutes, 45 minutes or one hour. These by appointment only classes are ideal for those who are new to Pilates or have physical limitations.

"Pilates can greatly make a huge difference in your overall health without taking a toll on your body," Pennock says. "It develops a strong core which in turn strengthens your back and abdominals giving one long lean muscles and increased flexibility. Pilates creates an evenly developed body, improves sports performance and prevents injury."

Pennock says Pilates is different from yoga because of the use of equipment and frequent one-on-one training. Many of the same movements are used, especially during mat Pilates classes, but the use of equipment can make the movements more challenging, and therefore improve strength and mobility even more.
