Helping You Find Your Center at New Haven's Fresh Yoga

By Marina Jokic

Fresh Yoga is run by Heidi Sormaz, Ph.D., ERYT-500 and offers a number of yoga styles and experience levels depending on ability and interest. Before getting into specifics, Sormaz gives us a quick rundown of the most immediate benefits associated with practicing. From visibly decreasing stress to promoting a more stable mental state, yoga can also aid in reducing certain harmful hormones in the body.

"The main benefit of yoga is that it helps you change your breathing," points out Sormaz. Once you learn how to free up the habitual constriction and habits of your breathing, you can lower your physiological stress levels. In turn, lowering stress directly impacts all aspects of your mind and body in a myriad of positive ways.

Can someone lose weight doing yoga exercises? Absolutely, says Sormaz, who is keen on instilling in her students a deep sense of awareness and mindfulness. When you acquire a heightened awareness of yourself and your surroundings, you become more attuned to what your body actually needs and wants. In turn, those habits lead to better food choices and a boost of physical activity. On a physiological level, certain types of yoga have been proven to lower cortisol levels, which are correlated with weight loss.

To those hesitant souls who are debating whether or not to take up yoga, Sormaz recommends getting your feet wet with a beginner's course. Like any new undertaking, yoga requires quite a bit of practice. If you begin with a basics or level one course, you have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals before moving to a more challenging class.

Fresh Yoga offers an assortment of classes including Vinyasa Yoga, Forrest Yoga, Power Yoga, Sridaiva, Mixed-Level Hatha Yoga among others. Some of the more specialized classes include Teen Yoga, Mommy and Baby Yoga, and Prenatal Yoga.

The atmosphere at the studio is comfortable, uncluttered and inviting. There are two locations to choose from ? Erector sq at 319 Peck St and 9th sq at 49 Orange St. Any class pass is good at either location. Erector Sq is large, beautiful, and serene - and the downtown space, evokes a more playful and dynamic vibe. There are a variety of options at Fresh Yoga which will nurture your mind and your body. New students to Fresh Yoga can purchase a special class card which is 2-Weeks of Unlimited Yoga for $30.
