Located in an old barn in Hartford, CT, Heirloom Market is a natural foods marketplace and café. Julia Koulouris, who owns Heirloom Market with her husband Spiro, calls it seed to plate dining, which takes farm to table dining to the next level. In addition to offering local, organic and non-GMO products and menu items, Heirloom Market sells the essentials for creating an at-home garden.
"Our food sources should be clean and sustainable," Koulouris says. "We...try to provide our customers with local [and] farm fresh produce and other food items whenever possible. If it is also GMO free and organic, then even better."
The café serves locally roasted coffee and espresso, fresh pastries, breads, sandwiches, paninis, soups and salads. Also on the property is a seed and garden center. Here, customers will find Baker Creek's heirloom seeds to start their own at-home garden. Also available are gardening supplies.
Koulouris says that her interest in the importance of organic and GMO-free foods came about when she was pregnant with her son in 2012. After being an advocate for the farm to table philosophy, she says deciding to honor that movement in her own business was a natural step. Koulouris and her husband have prior experience in the hospitality industry and wanted to offer their customers a place that just felt good to be in.
"We really just want?for our customers to have a place in their community that feels good and welcoming and inspires them to eat more good food?get a good cup of coffee and somewhere to pick up the fixings for a simple, healthy dinner," Koulouris says. "It didn't exist, so we created it!"
