Gutter Installation and Cleaning 101: An Interview with Johnny Rivas of John's Gutter Cleaning

By Johnny Rivas

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

My company has been servicing the state of Connecticut for the past nine years. I ensure my customers receive expert service no matter what the job entails. We dedicate ourselves to providing customers with gutter maintenance and installation, as well as siding and roofing.

Is there something that most people don't know about gutter installation that they should know?

Most people don't know that you can help protect your home from water damage with screens even if you don't have gutters.

What are the main types of gutters to choose from, and do you have any recommendations for houses in Rhode Island?

Most residential gutters come in two sizes - 5" and 6" - and are made of either aluminum, steel, zinc, vinyl or copper in a standard "K" style. I would recommend aluminum gutters. In my opinion aluminum is more durable and lasts longer.

Do you suggest installing a gutter guard in order to prevent build-up?

Gutter guards are just one of a few ways to prevent buildup. But I always recommend using screens. They are usually made of aluminum or plastic, are installed on top of an open gutter and are designed to keep debris from entering into the gutter bottom. Screens attach to the gutter with screws or clips.

What are the basics of gutter cleaning and how often should it be done?

I remove all debris by hand then flush the gutters with water to make sure everything is flowing as it should. I recommend gutter cleaning be done minimum twice a year, in June after the pollen has settled and in November before winter sets in.

What are some of the biggest benefits of having your gutter cleaned regularly?

Your gutters will function properly and protect your home from water damage.

Do you have any tips for homeowners who haven't done much (or any) cleaning and aren't sure what condition their gutters are in?

Have an assessment done immediately to see if everything is working properly and address any leaks or clogs if necessary.

What's the best way for people to contact your company?

The best way to contact my company is to call 860-953-0416 for a quote or to schedule an estimate or go to my website and send me an email.
