Get Help with Your Home Flooring: An Interview with Peter Escobar of Colonial Flooring Plus

By Peter Escobar

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer

Colonial Flooring Plus is a full-service flooring retail store located in Wallingford. Its 2,400 square foot showroom offers the latest styles and colors in the flooring and floor covering industry. It caters to individuals and organizations in the residential, commercial, industrial and nonprofit sectors. A wide range of major brands of carpets, vinyl flooring, hardwood, bamboo, cork, ceramic and porcelain tile are available for professional installation or cash and carry. Free measuring and estimating available.

What are the biggest decisions that homeowners need to make when it comes to new flooring?

First and foremost, the homeowner must do a reasonable amount of homework. They should begin by identifying two or three flooring companies they would approach to determine the best options for their flooring project. They should rely on friends, neighbors or coworkers that have had a good experience with a flooring company. In addition, they should check for reviews and complaints with Better Business Bureau and license status with Consumer Protection Agency. The consumer should also find out if the company has any professional affiliations/designations and find out about its involvement in the local community.

Can you briefly list the main steps involved in getting new flooring from start to finish?

Shopping for new flooring can be confusing and frustrating if the consumer is not prepared.

a) Determine the area(s) where new flooring is needed and the amount of foot traffic.
b) Identify the reasons or issues for the replacement of the existing flooring.
c) Bring furniture fabric swatches and paint color of the area(s) in question to the flooring store.
d) Let the flooring sales associate know how many adults, children and pets reside in the house.
e) Estimate how long you are planning to stay in the current home.
f) Estimate a budget for the flooring project.
g) Ask the flooring store about measuring, estimating, liability insurance, state license, product and installation warranties, and references.
h) Ask about the installation date(s), furniture handling, removal and disposal of existing floors, as well as maintenance and warranty information for the new flooring.

How would you recommend that people choose the right flooring for a particular room in their house?

It is extremely important to determine the most suitable flooring for a particular area. A knowledgeable flooring professional should conduct a full assessment of the area where the new flooring would be installed. It needs to be determined how the room would be utilized, the amount of foot traffic, the color of the walls, the amount of natural light (as well as artificial light), and color of the furniture. They should also look into the flooring they are looking to purchase (the manufacturer, product reviews).

What are your favorite flooring products, and why are those your favorites?

The great advances in technology in the industry in the last few years have allowed flooring manufacturers to improve and introduce many flooring products. The consumer nowadays has a lot more options than ever before. Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) in particular is my favorite. It offers the consumer the wood, tile and stone look in a variety of styles, colors and sizes. In addition, LVF is durable, water-resistant, comfortable and quiet to walk on, and easy to install and maintain. LVF can enhance the look inside your home.

What advice would you give to people when it comes to their budget for new flooring?

Their budget must be realistic, particularly if the consumer is working in conjunction with another home improvement project. They must identify the projected total cost of the new flooring project (with their preferred option) before they sign a contract with the flooring company. They should also identify a second flooring option, lower in price, in the event that the first option is out of their budget. An experienced flooring expert should be able to assist the consumer with a product to meet their budget.
