Four Gates Healing Arts Encourages Healing With Ancient Asian Therapies

By Pamela Sosnowski

If Western medicine has made little or no impact on your chronic and/or painful health condition, then you may want to consider an alternative, more holistic treatment such as acupuncture, massage, Reiki, or yoga. All four are available at Four Gates Healing Arts of Brookfield, which has been helping clients feel their best and live pain-free since 2004.

"It has been my dream since starting my education in massage and acupuncture to help guide others in connecting to their bodies, to elicit a sense of healing and well being," owner and founder Rita Valentino said. "Since beginning my practice, I have witnessed the profound effects of massage therapy and acupuncture, both physically and emotionally."

The "four gates" in the clinic's name refers to a phrase in Chinese medicine where a combination of several therapies create physical and emotional well being. They also refer to the four main services offered to treat a variety of health conditions from physical pain to insomnia. Clients are encouraged to try as many as they like to find the ideal combination and frequency that works for them and their needs.

Several forms of massage are available at Four Gates Healing Arts, including Swedish, deep tissue, sports, prenatal, and more. Massage simply involves the manipulation of soft tissue to decrease muscle stiffness, pain, and stress.

Acupuncture is also administered at the clinic and although the ancient Chinese practice uses needles, they are extremely hair-thin and painless. Acupuncture is based on the belief that the body contains pathways or meridians along which energy (called Qi; pronounced as "chee") flows. When these meridians become blocked, it can lead to discomfort or pain in the body. Inserting acupuncture needles along specific acupuncture points of the body helps promote self-healing and open up the Qi, restoring health. Acupuncture has been recognized as a viable treatment for many conditions including skin problems, digestive disorders, arthritis, and more.

A little less familiar to some is Reiki, a Japanese form of alternative medicine where a practitioner places their hands lightly on or over a client's body to channel energy to encourage healing.

"(Reiki is) a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body and restore physical and emotional well-being," Valentino said. "Most people find Reiki deeply relaxing and beneficial for a wide variety of issues. It is also used in tandem to accentuate the healing results of massage and acupuncture."

Valentino is a registered nurse, licensed massage therapist, certified Reiki master and teacher, licensed acupuncturist, and registered yoga instructor. Through Four Gates Healing Arts, she is dedicated to fulfilling her life's purpose of helping to heal others.

"I love what I do and I think my clients feel that," she said. "The merging of skill and compassion is what I wish to convey in every session."
