'Off the Couch and Into the Trees:' The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum

By Elisha Neubauer

Want to climb through the forest like a monkey? Try The Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, CT. Modeled after the adventure parks of Europe, The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum features eleven tree top trails, twenty-one different zip lines, and almost one hundred and sixty-one separate challenge bridges.

Operated by parent company Outdoor Ventures, The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum is the largest forest climbing park in the New England area. "The Discovery location has proved to be an excellent location for The Adventure Park," says Anthony Wellman, spokesman for the park. "Situated conveniently in Fairfield County, Connecticut, it serves all the surrounding towns as well as many visitors to the area. Although operated as a separate entity from the Museum, a portion of its ticket sales benefits The Discovery Museum & Planetarium. We have education, fun, self-discovery, and family recreation all combined here."

The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum has a saying: "Get off the couch and into the trees!" And you can. The park offers many platforms and trails leading into the trees, as well as the new Monkey Grove climbing area. "Today people have so many indoor-oriented activities it is all too easy to become sedentary and disconnected from the natural world around us," explains Wellman. "The Adventure Park is designed to help people become active and have fun in the outdoors at a level which is comfortable for them." Non-climbing party members are allowed to enter the park free of admission, so those who might not feel comfortable strapping on a harness themselves can enjoy the beautiful park pathways and benches - while following family members above.

There's plenty to keep them busy. "We want people to know this is not 'a zip line park' but rather 'a climbing park with zip lines,'" Wellman says. "Zip lines are only part of the fun." The park also offers night time climbs for added adventure. The park comes to life after dark with soft LED lighting, creating a magical effect that the park has nicknamed it 'Twightlighting.' There is enough light to climb safely - while maintaining a natural feel to the area.

Bringing your family to The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum in Bridgeport is a unique way to pass an afternoon together. In a day and age where we live our lives online, the park is a wonderful way to create lasting memories and bonds, in person and outside.
