Climbers of All Levels Strap Up and Have Fun at Rock Climb Fairfield

By Kelly Church

For anyone looking to learn to rock climb in Bridgeport, CT, Rock Climb Fairfield is located within the Sportsplex and can teach anyone the ins and outs of the sport. All levels are welcomed at Rock Climb Fairfield, according to Program Manager Chris Moyle. The facility has classes for every type of climber, including bouldering, and extras like yoga and aerial silk classes.

New rock climbers can start with the certification course that teaches the essential skills to climbing. Students learn basic knots, how to use the equipment and how to belay, supporting another climber by being responsible for the feed of the rope and ensuring they don't fall. There is also a separate class for learning to lead climb, however Rock Climb Fairfield requires several months of belay experience and a comfort of climbing 5.9 or greater terrain before taking the lead climbing class.

Pro climbers can take classes, too. The gym offers a technique tune up, led by Ascent Climbing's Nate McKenzie. This class is hands on, teaching hand and footwork on the wall, types of movement and body positioning. It is designed to make climbers more effective and improve overall technique.

The gym also provides opportunities for climbers of all experience levels to get out of the gym and climb. The $99 trip is a full day experience and climbers will learn the basics of outdoor climbing and moving effectively on real rocks. Equipment is provided and experience is not required. Adults and kids as young as 12 can attend.

"Climbing is an open-minded community sport," Moyle says. "Leave your prejudices at the door and come and join our community. It's not just all macho girls and guys. It is a sport anyone can get into with relative ease."

Passes to climb indoors can be purchased for $18 for a whole day for adults, $15 for students and military personnel, and $12 for youth. Guests who plan on just bouldering and not rock climbing can purchase passes for $14. Equipment for rock climbing can also be rented for additional fees. Rock Climb Fairfield also has yoga almost daily and aerial silk courses. These specialty classes have special rates and can be signed up for online.
