Beautiful Cakes, Exquisite Flavors at Sweet Maria's of Waterbury

By Marina Jokic

"Our motto means that a cake should taste as good as it looks," says Sanchez. Rich variety, sumptuous flavor, and high quality ingredients are the essential elements that Sanchez swears by and says are all equally important to producing first-grade pastries.

The purpose of a cake is to mark an occasion, to celebrate or just to enjoy a delicious dessert. Many a time, you've come across beautiful and intricate cakes that appear out of this world, and yet the taste leaves you wanting. When it comes to dessert, looks are certainly important, but taste is king at Sweet Maria's.

A visually stunning cake captures the attention, but a beautiful and flavorful cake is more of a rarity these days. For that reason, Sweet Maria's strives to deliver both looks and taste to its customers. "We always use the finest and freshest ingredients in our cakes- real butter, sugar, flour, eggs, fresh fruit and heavy cream," exclaims Sanchez.

Sweet Maria's style of decorating is simple, yet elegant, and aims to tailor each cake to the needs and wants of the customer. Sanchez says that each cake can be decorated with the themes and colors of a particular event. But don't dwell on character cakes or large sculpture cakes, as those just don't fit in with Sweet Maria's style. Simplicity is key in preparing the decorations.

The hands-on decorating cake with buttercream frosting is quite popular. You can create your own flavor from a smorgasbord of options. The do-it-yourself cupcake bar gives everyone the opportunity to be creative and learn the basics of decorating a pastry. The list of flavors for both include Apricot Mousse, Black Forest, Booze Crooze (yellow cake with rum, coconut, and pineapple), Coffee Hazelnut, Chocolate Banana Cream, Pumpkin Spice, Chocolate Kahlua, and Lemon Poppy seed among many, many others.

After a short demonstration, everyone in the group gets a cake and frosting to create his or her own masterpiece. With the proper tools and expert instruction from Sweet Maria's cake decorator, students leave with a basic understanding of assembly and piping along with their delicious creation and new recipes.

One of the most popular classes is the Girls Night Out cupcake class, which is a bit more casual than the rest. Participants can get together and try their skills at the different cupcake stations such as the whipped cream, buttercream, fondant, and ganache. Maria's also offers seasonal classes and kids' classes.
