At Wildflour Confections, That Girl Can Bake!

By S. Mathur

The Seymour, Connecticut bakery, Wildflour Confections, first began as a Facebook page in 2013. The gourmet cakes and cupcakes quickly became Southern Connecticut favorites and it soon became apparent that there was need for a brick-and-mortar store.

"I always worked in bakeries and fell in love with cake decorating," owner Alyssa DeMatteo said. "I began taking my own orders and started Wildflour as page on Facebook. Soon the order started piling up and I rented a commercial kitchen to begin selling my product to restaurants. It just kept escalating so the idea of having my own shop was becoming more and more real."

Being a small scale gourmet sweet shop gives Wildflour Confections a taste advantage.

"Being a boutique bakery we really focus on a there being a gourmet experience with each bite," DeMatteo said. "Our products are baked daily, never made in advance and frozen, which really makes a difference. We bake in small batches which sets us apart from establishments that mass-produce."

Custom cakes for weddings, birthdays and baby events are a specialty. For weddings and showers, consultations and complimentary tastings ensure that the cake will be right in every detail. For all celebrations, big and small, unique custom toppers, banners, and fresh flowers mark the special day.

"At Wildflour our priority is to create a sweet product that can turn an empty table into a showcase that all of your guests at your event are raving over, with it's appearance and taste, equally," DeMatteo said.

Cupcakes come in 150 flavors which change with the seasons. They can also be customized. Gluten and allergen-free choices are available for all menu items.

DeMatteo shares her love of decorating as well as the secrets of the art through the Frost and Sip program. This is an opportunity for a group of friends to share an evening with a bottle of wine, learning to decorate their own cakes or cupcakes. It's better than a paint and sip because at the end of the evening, you can eat your creations, and even share with family and friends.

The downtown cafe with its chic decor is a favorite stop for many. Most people just stop to pick up their sweet treats but there are a few tables to sit down and enjoy a cupcake and coffee. It's a great location for meeting up with a friend or even catching up on schoolwork.
