Acts 4 Ministry Inc. Meets the Needs of Community Members in Need

By Elisha Neubauer

In every city, every community, there are those who have fallen on hard times; those who need a helping hand from time to time in order to survive everyday life. In Waterbury, Connecticut, the Acts 4 Ministry Inc. is striving to minimize the struggle, providing much-needed free clothing, housewares and furniture items to low income area residents-in-need. The non-denominational, non-profit supports the community by providing aid to those who have faced a dire emergency, such as a fire, flood, or storm.

"For some individuals, these annual free clothing give-away dates are often the only opportunity for them to find quality clothing and accessories for themselves and their families to wear year-round to school, work, job interviews, church, and other social functions," Sarah Elizabeth Carabetta, executive director of Acts 4 Ministry tells us.

Through their annual coat drives, Acts 4 has managed to provide over 1,000 free outer clothing items of gently-worn coats, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and thermals to children and adults in need, helping to protect them against cold winter weather. The organization has continued to hold annual drives, collecting items such as blankets, school uniforms, business attire, and prom dresses. "Acts 4 provides a reduction in blight by collecting furniture with a fully funded box truck by Ion Bank Foundation," states Carabetta. "The vehicle has accepted over 5,000 items of furniture to repurpose to 162 families in need."

So how does one find Acts 4 Ministry? Carabetta broke it down for us, explaining their grassroots approach in detail. "Families and individuals are frequently referred to Acts 4 Ministry by other charitable and social organizations to assist people who have suddenly lost their homes to a fire, flood or other unexpected devastation or upsetting life event," she details. "The organization's mission is to build relationships with people with varying levels of needs while providing them with the basics of daily living."

It is important to note that Acts 4 Ministry is not a church, but instead partners with area churches, social service agencies, and public schools as a method to identify and serve people with needs. As a non-denominational service, Acts 4 Ministry provides aid regardless of people's faith, race, creed, or national origin or their willingness to participate in religious activities.

"It is a collaborative group of a volunteer Board of Directors, staff members, and a multitude of volunteers who desire to share God's love by meeting the physical needs of others," Carabetta elaborates. "They achieve this goal daily on many levels by collecting and distributing, free-of-charge to recipients, clothing, housewares and furniture."
